Camp Description:

Street Art has gone mainstream since the days of Keith Haring, and with the arrivals of artists like Banky and KAWS on the fine art scene, street art can no longer be denied its place in the cultural zeitgeist.

Campers will experience what it is like to draw in public space and understand the importance of street art and its effects on a community. Throughout the week, we will be planning chalk projects to do as a group collaboration in the studio before going out on our walk to draw. We will be collaborating with stores and businesses in our community to beautify storefront sidewalks and empty areas to make a connection with everyone who encounters the work.

The first thing campers will learn about street art is how to choose the space and location for their work. We will be taking walks along downtown Burlingame to observe and scout possible spaces for our chalk artwork. Once our canvas has been selected, campers will begin the artwork planning process, reflecting on their experiences to make a connection between the space, visual elements, and motifs of the community business.

Before drawing in public, campers will prepare an artist statement to explain what they hope to achieve with their artwork in case they are asked what they are doing in public.

What Campers Learn

• How to plan a Community Art event
• Explore ways how community art can improve interpersonal relationships
• How to use colored chalk and drawing techniques to achieve their design ideas
• Identify different industries in our community and create a theme that relates to them
• Experience real-outdoor community art-making and be able to express their ideas to people
• Art Critique (Public speech training)

What Campers Create

• A list and map of campers favorite stores around downtown Burlingame community
• Purpose and value, artist statement
• A series of drawing designs that relates to each store around the community
• Outdoor sidewalk drawing using colored chalks

Camp Info

Full-Day Camp: Monday - Friday / 9:00am - 2:00pm (5H)

Half-Day Camp: Monday - Friday / 9:00am - 11:30pm (2.5H)

Summer Camp will meet at our studio in Downtown Burlingame and will be OUTDOORS for most of the camp hours. Campers will have exclusive use of the building during camp.

Onsite:

Full-Day Camp $580  (Early Bird: $530 Before 3/31,2021)

Half-Day Camp $400  (Early Bird: $350 Before 3/31,2021)
