Camp Description
Pop art’s origins can be traced back to the East Coast with groundbreaking artists like Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Keith Haring. On the West Coast the claim to modern pop art’s throne always lied with Wayne Theibaud. Theibaud’s style combined elements of daily life and use of heavy pigments to create vivid artwork that touches on people’s memories. We pay homage to the still living (he is 100 years old!) Theibaud by learning about their influences, artistic characteristics, motifs, and style in order to emulate these masterpieces but with a Clay House Art twist.
Our classic artwork camps combine 2D and 3D artmaking techniques to recreate these classic artwork in air dry clay. For this week students will delve into modern art with Wayne Thiebaud’s 3 Machines. Campers will learn about his unique painting style and sketch the iconic scene onto canvas. Then, students will start to layer air dry clay on the canvas with techniques invented right here in Clay House Art’s studio, to recreate the visual elements of the original 3 Machines. Campers will then create their own 3D gumball machine decoration that they can put on their desks at home.
By the end of the week, campers will have created their own masterwork recreations combining traditional techniques in sketch, oil pastel on a new air dry clay medium.
Students receive a set of 3 Take-Home Clay Modeling Tools by registering today!
