Camp Description

Everyone loves good animation and the stories that are told through the artform. In today’s digital world the tools and skills to tell our stories are more accessible than ever. Our 3D Clay Characters Design + Stop-Motion Animation camp prepares students with the skills they will need to bring their own visions to life, in a fun and creative design environment.

Whether campers are interested in Art, Stage/Character Design, Creative Storytelling or just curious about how Stop-Motion animation works - our camps are perfect for students to get real hands-on experience in the production process of a stop-motion animated film. Our project-based learning style splits the production process into two weeks. During week one campers begin by brainstorming their character and stage design, followed by the actual artmaking process to create their characters, set, accessories, and props for shooting. In week two campers will deep dive into their script and learn video shooting/editing techniques for stop motion in order to create their final film. On Friday, we will host a viewing party and award ceremony to showcase everyone's films. Instructors and assistants will get our campers ready for a fun, instructional, and impactful week.

At Clay House Art- all of our camps empower students to become CREATORS rather than just CONSUMERS of media, art, and culture.

Campers receive a Take-Home Cell Phone Tripod and a Take-Home model-toy display case by registering today.

Week 1: Into to Clay Stop-Motion & Air-dry Clay Modeling

  • Project-based learning (PBL)
  • Character Design
  • Stage Design
  • Accessories and Prop Design
  • Air-dry Clay Artmaking

Campers will start out learning the fundamentals of Character and Stage Design, using air-dry clay and mix-media to create their favorite characters with a matching stage theme. They will build up their clay hand modeling techniques first, then transition to developing their creative character design skills.

After making their characters, students will start designing a stage using mix-media and cardboard, to set the scene for their imaginative clay stop-motion animation story. Any accessories and props that are needed for thier films to come to life will also be made using air-dry clay and mixed media.

Campers will be introduced to the stop-motion animation process and by the end of the week, students will have a series of clay characters, a 3D mix-media stage, accessories and props, and complete drawn drafts of their story ideas-ready to be filmed the following week.

What Campers Learn

Week 2: 3D Clay Characters Design & Stop-Motion Animation Making

In the second week, campers will learn about the design thinking process (Empathize - Define - Ideate - Prototype - Test) and how it applies to video production. Using their drafts from week one, campers will direct and plan each scene of their video and work with Clay House Art’s instructors to create props for their shoots.

Campers will use an app-based animation software to create their films and will learn the principles of movement, timing, and how different techniques elicit emotions.

During the filming process, campers will have an opportunity to show their voice-acting talents as we introduce them to soundboards and voice editing techniques that can enhance their productions.

At the end of the two weeks, campers will have brought everything they have learned together into making their imaginative Claymation video.

We will end the week with a viewing party where each camper will introduce their videos with Clay House Art giving each video being presented an scar style award.
